The research directions have been mainly focused on research and development of Emerging Infectious Disease animal models such as models for SARS, HIV, HBV and AIV, and development and evaluation of vaccines. The animal models developed in the institute for primate AIDS and human SARS are well recognized by the coteries all over the world. The Institute has become one of the main bases in China for R&D of human infectious disease models, attracted foreign research groups on HIV, and set up collaborations on AIDS with US NIH and on HIV therapeutic vaccine with French Academy of Science which is the best one in the therapeutic effects in recent 5 years. The SARS-CoV infected rhesus is currently one of the most reliable models for SARS in the world.
